After the various debacles of Seth Rollins’ Universal Title run and with The Fiend not fully rehabilitated, WWE could really use an over, babyface champion at the minute. That’s where Rusev comes in.
It doesn’t seem to matter how shoddily they book him, fans have shown a repeated willingness to get behind ‘The Bulgarian Brute’. If WWE can finally get behind him too they could be onto something.
His current cuckold storyline might be both the best and worst thing on WWE TV, at the same time. If nothing else, the angle’s spectacular YouTube numbers are keeping The Bulgarian Brute relevant even with casual fans who don’t tune in for Raw and SmackDown.
Lana cheating with Bobby Lashley and the subsequent weekly humiliations would have been hugely destructive for a less popular performer but fans still cheered on Monday night when Ru Ru finally got a bit of retribution. If this leads to a decisive victory at TLC (presuming the feud runs beyond Starrcade), it should be time to move Rusev onto bigger and better things.
