WWE have got their work cut out rebuilding Cain Velasquez and as usual it’s a problem of their own making. Keen to grab some headlines ahead of Crown Jewel, they rushed the newcomer too quickly into a title feud. Cain lost to Brock in swift, decisive fashion and his credibility was dented before he was ever really established.
On the other hand, his UFC title win over Lesnar is just as impressive and legitimate now as it was before the Saudi Show. There’s still the potential for a rubber match and a title switch but Velasquez would need to earn it.
If he arrived on Raw and made his designs on Brock’s belt clear, ‘The Beast’ and Paul Heyman could dodge and prevaricate entertainingly for as long as is needed. Meanwhile Cain could build up his aura with a string of impressive victories over credible opponents until his claim to a rematch is undeniable.
