10 Terrible Iterations Of Legendary Gimmick Matches
7. Reverse Battle Royal
Our second Battle Royal variant to feature on this list, but
easily the inferior iteration of the two.
In 2006, TNA looked to shake things up by putting their own twist on an age-old institution, and the outcome was a Reverse Battle Royal. Described as an “inside out Battle Royal”, in which the participants would begin by surrounding the ring, before fighting their way inside of that ring, whereupon your typical Battle Royal would ensue.
In practice, this resulted in a lot of faffing about at ringside, because really it’s not that hard to climb into the ring. In fact, every single wrestler who has ever wrestled has done this at least once every match, so it seemed fairly silly that some guys were suddenly left incapable of doing so.
Or worse still, they’d wander around the ring looking for someone to beat up as opposed to actually attempting to climb through the ropes.
And as if that hadn't been long-winded enough, the final two survivors in the Battle Royal would then enter a third stage, competing in a one-on-one singles bout to determine the ultimate winner.
Clearly TNA thought this match-up was a great idea, because they went ahead and staged a second instalment at Bound for Glory 2007. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter didn’t quite agree, though, voting it the worst worked match of 2006, a verdict that’s tough to argue with.
