10 Terrible Iterations Of Legendary Gimmick Matches
6. Doomsday Cage Match
Here we have another entry that may sound pretty cool on
paper, but the final product wasn’t quite all it was cracked up to be.
To set the scene, Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage were looking to fend off the eight-man strong Alliance to End Hulkamania, and to do so they would have to beat them in a Doomsday Cage match. This would entail Hogan and Savage beginning the match atop a three-tier cage structure, and having to work their way through various compartments until they reached the bottom whereupon a wrestling ring - and a resultant match - would be awaiting their arrival.
But this wasn’t really a pro wrestling match. No, this was an early frontrunner to Total Wipeout, a gloried episode of Jungle Run, or something you might see on Takeshi’s Castle.
Given that the upper levels had a mesh floor, there wasn’t a great deal they could do on such unsteady ground. And so we were subjected to a lot of slow non-action, staggering around, and lumbering offense designed to eat up time. There were even long periods where guys were just standing still or laying around waiting for something to happen.
Furthermore, even from a booking perspective this one was ridiculous, it was eight versus two and somehow it was the duo of Hogan and Savage who came out on top.
I say “somehow” but, really, I’ve found an explanation there with the mention of Mr. Hogan. He wasn’t going to lose this one, was he?
