10 Terrible Iterations Of Legendary Gimmick Matches
5. Chamber Of Horrors
Another entry, another WCW cage match variation. This time,
we look at Halloween Havoc 1991 and the spookily-dubbed Chamber of Horrors match.
A star-studded affair saw El Gigante, Sting and the Steiner Brothers take on Abdullah the Butcher, the Diamond Studd (Scott Hall), Cactus Jack and Big Van Vader in what was essentially your standard cage match. Although, there was of course the minor addition of the Chair of Torture (basically a second cage housing an electric chair) which was lowered down mid-match, complete with its own eerie soundtrack.
The aim would then be to place your opponent in the chair, and activate the power switch to give the poor soul a “shocking” experience, in the words of JR.
But with the chair taking up much of the space in the ring, the majority of the action was consigned to the narrow corridor between the cage and the apron, making for a fairly disjointed and ambling affair. And while a variety of weapons were soon employed, it was tough to keep tabs on how exactly they were being used and what was really going on at all.
The contest’s conclusion arrived when Abdullah had Rick Steiner seated in the chair, only for Rick to overpower his foe and pull-off the old switcheroo. Cactus Jack then proceeded to yank down the power switch anyway, inadvertently shocking his partner. Cue flashing lights, a flurry of pyro and a spasm from Abdullah, and the end of one of the wackiest, corniest cage match iterations of all time.
