10 Terrible WWE Religious Gimmicks

2. Papa Shango

Oh dear. Papa Shango was a voodoo practitioner. He carried skulls around and made smoke appear with his spooky magic. He was supposed to represent a Haitian Loa, a voodoo spirit, specifically Baron Samedi. Seeing as the film Live and Let Die came out a mere 20 years earlier, the WWE were really keeping their finger on the pulse of culture. He rolls his eyes, jiggled his skulls and famously botched on the ending set-pieces of Wrestlemania VIII. He was supposed to break up Hogan pinning Sycho Sid in the main event, but missed his cue, forcing Sid to kick out of the Atomic Legdrop, which was pretty much unheard of. He also made green ooze leak from the Ultimate Warrior's head. https://youtu.be/J6YKICReUCY?t=126 He was pretty godawful, as well as being ever so slightly demeaning to both a race and a religion - the double-header. He was voted Worst Gimmick and Most Embarrassing Wrestler in the 1992 Wrestling Observer Newsletter Awards. It's not difficult to see why.
