During the infamous 'Summer Of Punk' storyline in 2011, CM Punk was hot news, and definitely the perfect antidote for adult fans to the more childish, saccharine personality of one John Cena. It simply cannot be refuted that Punk was excellent during this time, because he was, but he did say something which conflicts with his anti-WWE persona of 2014. Even whilst on television as a character, Punk stated that he had immense respect for John Cena, something which has been repeated frequently in interviews since their on-screen rivalry. Now, having appreciation for his peer is not the problem, neither is recognising that John Cena works harder than just about anybody for WWE, but it goes against Punk's usual stance on things to say he respects the poster boy. During their feud, Punk said that whilst he respected Cena, he didn't like the fact that he was continually pushed ahead of him for outside projects, or media appearances. Somewhat missing the point, Punk point blank refused to stare in the face the fact that it had been he who had made all of this happen through his championing of professional wrestling over 'Sports Entertainment'.
