10 Things You Didn't Know About WWE's Hell In A Cell Gimmick
3. Mick Foley Wasn't The First Person To Bump Off The Cell
Due to the fame of Mick Foley's bump off the cell in 1998, a misconception has developed that he was the first man to bump off the cell. Wrong. The first person to take a fall from the sixteen feet structure was actually the Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels. It was part of the very first Hell in a Cell match at Bad Blood 1997. Shawn Michaels has previously commented that upon hearing about the cell, he instantly told the WWF crew that he wanted to do something off the top of it. That's the kind of guy HBK is, always looking to do something dramatic. He talked it through beforehand with his opponent, The Undertaker, and later that night they executed a fall from the cage. The drop came when Michaels' was hanging off the side of the roof. Undertaker came over and stomped on Michaels' hands, causing him to cascade downward through the spanish announce table. At the time it felt very extreme and was one of the biggest spots the WWF up until that point. Then came Foley a year later. It was like Michaels' bump but multiplied by nuclear levels. The extra height from falling via a standing position was enough to make people forget HBK's bump ever happened. Foley's fall was so soon after and so much more dramatic, that it still casts a shadow over cell bouts to this day.
