10 Things You Don’t Know About WWE In 1998

7. The €œOutlaw Rule€ Was Formed On Raw

Some rules in professional wrestling fall under the label of common sense, and therefore don€™t need to be written down in the official rulebook. Bringing a gun or knife to the ring is definitely illegal. Attacking the fans is a big no-no. Never headbutt a Samoan (although wrestlers always seem to forget this). Another one of the rules that go without saying is €œyou can€™t pin your own tag team partner in a tornado match.€ In previous tornado matches, tag team partners might sometimes be tagged by both opponents and forced to fight each other. In 1998, the New Age Outlaws had this happen to them during a three-way tag team title match against the Legion of Doom and the Disciples of Apocalypse on Raw, and they chose to exert a loophole. Because there was no hard-and-fast rule that a tag team partner couldn€™t pin another tag team partner to win a match, Road Dogg laid on his back and Billy Gunn quickly pinned him to win the match. Because of this, the WWF had to institute a rule that in multi-team tag team matches, partners cannot pin each other to win the match, and dubbed it €œThe Outlaw Rule€ in honor of the Road Dogg and Billy Gunn. The rule was referenced here and there throughout the years, although not so much recently.
