10 Things Happening In WWE Right Now You Wouldn't Have Believed 12 Months Ago
4. Jinder Mahal - WWE Champion
One year ago, if someone told you that Jinder Mahal would become WWE Champion in 2017, chances are, you would have thought they were crazy. If they were to go on and say he would also hold multiple PPV victories over Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura, such outlandish claims would warrant a straight jacket. Nevertheless, here we are in 2017 and these facts do indeed ring true.
Mahal has spent a large portion of 2017 with WWE's most coveted prize and gone from jobber to kingpin in unprecedented fashion. At five months and counting, 'The Modern Day Maharaja' has already held the gold longer than some of the most legendary WWE Champions in company history - including the likes of Ric Flair, Mick Foley and Eddie Guerrero.
The fact that Mahal has achieved all of this in such a short space of time has left the audience torn on how to react. While his ascension has freshened up the title picture, the rapid manner in which it occurred has arguably damaged Mahal, as well as the title itself. Meanwhile, his recurring victories over Nakamura have done nothing but stall Nakamura's momentum.
Worst of all, Mahal's dramatic rise to the top following his rapid body transformation also sends a negative message to fellow performers, that the look is the be-all and end-all.
