Last December, WWE made the groundbreaking decision to counter World of Sport's scheduled UK TV revival with their own UK wrestling brand. For fans and workers in Britain, the news was monumental and the introduction of the WWE UK Championship was a key indication that WWE was taking the British market seriously.

The closest the UK had previously come to having its own title was the European Championship, proudly worn by such British luminaries as William Regal and Davey Boy Smith. A bespoke UK Title was a huge step further and the resultant UK Championship Tournament made for great viewing.

Introducing the world to some of the best talent on the UK scene, the tournament to crown the inaugural UK Champion felt genuinely historic. Voiced by Nigel McGuinness on commentary and played out before a raucous UK crowd, the show came across as revolutionary and the start of something truly exciting.

The title was allegedly created as a means of introducing a UK league of sorts, with its own show on the WWE Network, Sadly, that has yet to materialise; however, the introduction of the championship and subsequent defences on NXT TV and PPV have given the title decent visibility. Here's hoping the original plans become reality sooner than later.
