10 Things Missing From WWE Today

10. Competition

An obvious one to start with, and also the one that is the least likely to change any time soon. Professional wrestling is a truly unique industry, one in which the industry leader isn't really in the same business as the rest. WWE is way out ahead as the biggest pro wrestling company on the planet, but it puts together an entirely different form of the art to everybody else.

WWE misses competition however, as having a monopoly has allowed it to get lazy with its creative. If there is no one nipping at your heels, why would you bother to improve? WWE knows it is safe in its position and will always have more money than the rest, and it knows that for 95% of the individuals involved in the industry it is the Holy Grail.

The good news is that more and more wrestling companies are seeming to be increasing their platform. New Japan Pro Wrestling is there for anyone who still wants their wrestling to be, well, wrestling-based. ICW is putting on the biggest independent wrestling show in European history this weekend. WCPW has been putting on great show after great show after a shaky start, and Progress Chapter 39 promises to be a genuine 'I was there' show.

These are just three examples, but options for fans are there. The problem is that there is no competition for WWE, and thus the company has a free ride to do what it wants when it wants.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
