10 Things That Made Us Proud To Be Wrestling Fans In 2018

3. The Golden Lovers' Reunion

Evolution Golden Lovers
NJPW

NJPW haven't had the best year by their immaculate standards, but no pro-wrestling storyline felt as heartening or progressive as The Golden Lovers' reunion in 2018.

Those interested in their long, winding backstory must check out the most comprehensive breakdown of Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi's relationship found anywhere on the internet. Theirs is a beautiful story. Beautiful. The closest of close friends torn apart by the wrestling industry's rigours, they finally came back together in a torrent of emotion at The New Beginning in Sapporo. Tears flooded and confetti tumbled as Kenny and Kota embraced in the ring that night. 'The Golden Lover' had saved 'The Cleaner' from Cody and Hangman Page, returning Omega's favour from a few weeks prior, and it sparked an incredible, uplifting babyface run, the first arc of which culminated with Kenny's IWGP Heavyweight Title victory.

The smiles worn by Kenny and Kota on The Golden Lovers' first tag match back together (23 February) said it all. Radiating with positivity, hope, and passion, both had found their missing piece, and in doing so, adding another layer to what might be wrestling's most nuanced love story. Ever.
