7. Contract Negotiations Take Place In Front Of A Live Audience

In most sports, for example in boxing, matches are booked months in advance, with contracts signed way ahead of time. Often, both parties have certain demands to be met before a match can be agreed. Remember how many years it took for a Floyd Mayweather v Manny Pacquiao match to be signed, sealed and delivered? Wrestling, however, doesn’t play by those rules. Now admittedly, the first John Cena v The Rock WrestleMania match was signed one year in advance, but often, matches are verbally agreed to for later the same night.

Not only that, some of them have huge stipulations attached to them. The WrestleMania match between The Undertaker and Shane McMahon, after being scheduled, had some far-reaching stipulations added to the contract in the ring by Vince McMahon himself. Imagine Don King announcing changes to a World Heavyweight Championship match in public mere days before the big showdown. It just wouldn’t happen.

But in wrestling, matches are agreed (or sometimes just decreed without the participant’s consent) there and then. Wrestling lives in the moment. In the fast moving world of professional wrestling, where title matches can happen on a weekly basis, we don’t have time for complex negotiations. We live by our own rules.
