10 Things That Would Happen If AJ Styles Becomes WWE Champion
6. Criticism
Pro wrestling fans love to see someone rise to the top, just so they can then tear them back down. It has always been the way in this business. The fanbase is notoriously fickle.
How long it will take to play out with Styles is debatable, but if they started putting him against the likes of Rollins, it would quickly become clear where fan loyalty is placed.
Criticism of Styles will revolve around his promo style, which is the area he looks likely to be most exposed in if placed in the champion role. Not looking or sounding like a champion could see him being viewed as a flop in the eyes of the casual audience.
The danger is, in covering his weak points, the run could feel more about The Club than it does about him. It could be a case of a Benoit-esque title run, where the wrestler is respected, but doesn't really fit the bill of the champion.
Fans quickly lost interest in Benoit in 2004, and the same could happen to Styles in 2016.
