In an honest State of the Union address, the President elect will remain optimistic, but will be truthful when times are tough. They’ll let us know that there’s a ton of work left to be done, but that we should not give up hope. With that stated, Vince McMahon would have to admit that these are certainly not the best times for his company business-wise.

We’re over a decade and a half since the last boom period in wrestling. While the culture as a whole seems to be more accepting of sports entertainment, the vast majority of them are not watching. Vince can blame DVRs or the additions of Netflix and Hulu all he wants, but he’d have to admit that his company has not been serving the audience in an effective way.

Sure, the WWE Network has been a success, but the ratings for live shows are disturbing. It wasn’t too long ago where a sub 3.0 rating for Raw was alarming. Then it was 2.5. These days drawing under a 2.0 doesn’t even seem to concern management. A lot of work is going to have to be done to turn this thing around, but with the right people and the right ideas it is certainly possible.

Over these next four years, Vince will have to face the facts that if he doesn’t make some big changes, his audience will continue to erode. It’s going to be a difficult task, but with a long term vision in place, perhaps they can truly enter the mainstream again...

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
