When AJ Styles steps away from the squared circle and enjoys a much-deserved retirement, there will be one undisputed black mark on his otherwise sparkling resume: the Claire Lynch fiasco.

TNA attempted to reintroduce Attitude Era schlock storylines to the wrestling audience, beginning with one in which Styles was blackmailed by Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian. A noted family man, he had his fidelity called into question when his rivals produced documents and photographs of The Phenomenal One with another woman.

It was with that revelation that the Claire Lynch character was unleashed on the unsuspecting wrestling world.

The sheer stupidity of the storyline, coupled with the over-the-top nature of the performances by the actress portraying Lynch, grated at the nerves of wrestling fans. One of the best wrestlers of his generation, and two wildly talented opponents, were saddled with an abysmal storyline that did nothing for anyone involved.

Once again proving that they were little more than a second-rate knockoff of WWE when it came to complex, soap opera-esque storylines straight out of 1999, TNA embarrassed itself again.
