10. It Started With A Promo

The show began with a promo. Sound familiar? That's how most episodes of Raw and Smackdown begin these days. It happened a lot on Raw in 1998 too, but to see it at the start of a PPV event was pretty odd. The WWE Chairman Vince McMahon (who was in a wheelchair selling an ankle injury) welcomed us to the show and then introduced Mankind, who wrestled in a suit. The story at the time was that people believed Mankind would win the tournament since he was being groomed by McMahon to take the title. Mankind sucked up to the boss, and while McMahon wasn't open to it at first he eventually welcomed it. The idea was that McMahon would make the tournament favorable for Mankind and give him the easy win. After McMahon brought out the suit-wearing Mankind, it was time to learn who the mystery opponent would be.
