10 Things To Remember About WWE Survivor Series 98 Deadly Game Tournament

8. The Tournament Had 14 Wrestlers

The tournament was set up to be a 16 man tournament, but they decided to go with 14 instead, with The Undertaker and Kane getting byes into the quarterfinals. The first round matches were The Rock vs. Triple H, Goldust vs. Ken Shamrock, Mankind vs. Dwayne Gill, Jeff Jarrett vs. Al Snow, X-Pac vs. Steven Regal and Steve Austin vs. Big Boss Man. Going into the tournament, there were really only a few guys that people were believable as winners: Austin, Undertaker, Kane and then maybe The Rock or Mankind. At the time, Rock was gaining momentum as a babyface while Mankind was figured as a potential winner since he was getting help from McMahon. It's funny because people look at today's roster and think it's not very deep, but it's fair to say that they had the same problem 17 years ago as well. They really had to build up some of the guys to be main eventers and, eventually, they did.
