10 Things To Remember About WWE Survivor Series 98 Deadly Game Tournament
5. It Was A Big Night For Shane McMahon
Every performer has a night in their career where they have a coming out party or a moment where they go from being a nobody to a somebody. For Vince McMahon's son Shane, that night was Survivor Series 1998. Prior to this event, Shane was mostly doing commentary on Sunday Night Heat and appearing on television by his dad's side. He didn't have a character other than that. He was really just Vince McMahon's son and that was it. Shane worked as a referee, a role he did in the early 90s as well. During the Steve Austin/Mankind match, Vince pulled ref Mike Chioda out of the ring (Vince was faking the ankle injury) and then Shane slid in for what we thought would be the decisive pinfall for Austin. Instead, Shane flashed his middle fingers at Austin as if to say 'f**k you' to Stone Cold. Shortly after that, Mankind pinned Austin thanks to a Gerald Brisco chair shot, with Shane counting the pin. To end the show, Shane celebrated The Rock's WWE Title win to set up the beginning of a stable known as The Corporation. It was a huge night for Shane, who would go on to be one of WWE's best on-screen performers over the next decade.
