10 Things We Learned From Bret Hart On Stone Cold’s Broken Skull Sessions Podcast
2. He Wasn't Keen On A Submission Match Either
Much of the session revolved around 'Mania 13, and that's no shocker. The 'Submission Match' both Bret and Steve worked on that show is one of the best WWF/WWE matches ever, and it was always going to come up in the interview. That's true even though neither man was really that into the idea before working it.
Austin wasn't sold on submissions because he didn't use many holds, but Bret was just as frosty on the stipulation 'cause he thought it'd hold them back from topping their earlier Survivor Series 1996 match. Hart was so unexcited about the submission gimmick that he feared the bout would suck as he was making his entrance.
Thank God the real-life pals had knocked their heads together to come up with something more than mind-numbing rest holds. Bret argued that they should start the match with a "school fight". He was mindful not to work a slow pace like he and Bob Backlund had at 'Mania XI too. That match, for the record, is one Bret regards as the "worst of [his] career".
Poor Bob.
