The popular story told is that Vince McMahon put Randy Savage out to pasture by removing him from the ring and placing one of his biggest stars behind the announce desk. That incensed Randy to the point that he left the WWF and continued his career in WCW. Bruce Prichard had a different story to tell.

Savage confided in Bruce that he planned to wind down his in-ring career and shift into an office position with the WWF. That would allow him to be part of the creative team and still enable Randy to play commentator on screen. Best of all, he'd still be able to wrestle part time when the promotion needed him. There was no hint of frustration from Savage about stepping away from the ring.

This contradicts the story told for years that Savage wasn't happy towards the end of his WWF run. Clearly, he did end up unhappy, because he called McMahon late one night to inform him that he was WCW bound, but Prichard didn't hear that from Randy at the time.

Savage's departure came as a major shock to Bruce.
