Before Chris Benoit's tragic and untimely passing, David Benoit claims that his father was offered a road agent position by WWE in 2006. The Rabid Wolverine, not wanting to retire, initially turned down the offer to be a behind the scenes player in the company.

David claimed his dad was probably only a year away from retirement when he passed away, stating he was almost ready to "ride off into the sunset." He says that his father's ultimate goal was to open up a wrestling school in Atlanta, Georgia where Chris, Nancy and Daniel resided at their time of death. They had already made shirts for his school.

When asked about how he felt about his dad turning down the backstage producer role, Benoit said, "I wish he took it, or just retired. I asked him to retire too, in 2006 when he was off. I think he had surgery or something. He came back in October at No Mercy, and fought William Regal."

Chris asked David what his dad said when asked to retire and with pain in his voice, David said he was thinking about it and had nothing left to prove.
