Hulk Hogan has told old UK magazine FSM before that he wanted names like Sting and Ric Flair to jump from the NWA/WCW to the WWF in the late-80s. Others, like Bruce Prichard, have admitted to McMahon-led interest in Flair around the same time. Now, Ric himself is chiming in to tell the full story.

The WWF tried to sign him three different times during the decade.

Approaches were made in 1986, '87 and '88. That's amazing insight, because it shows that the garish, cartoon-like world McMahon was creating also appreciated the need for solid in-ring workers. Maybe he could see the bombastically colourful way Flair approached promos, or maybe Vince just wanted to gobble up all the star power he could.

On 'After The Bell', Ric said he was close to committing to a WWF deal each time. Right before signing on the dotted line, he changed his mind and decided that loyalty to the NWA meant more to him. It wasn't like he was underpaid anyway.
