There was panic in the McMahon household when it was revealed in mid-March that Shane had acute diverticulitis and, later, an umbilical hernia that required immediate attention. That put WWE's plans to tag Shane with Daniel Bryan against Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 34 in jeopardy.

Not wasting any time, Vince put in a call to a trusted lieutenant and asked Chris Jericho if he'd be willing to step into the breach.

Y2J didn't go in-depth on his answer during the podcast, but he did say that Vince wasn't sure if Shane would be able to work a match. As Jericho had history with Owens (both as a tag-team and as an enemy), it seemed perfect that he'd be the backup option.

Negotiations didn't get serious due to Shane's subsequent recovery. Though WWE had booked a failsafe angle, that "laryngeal contusion, trapezius and rhomboid strain"-causing SmackDown attack the promotion reported on their website, he was fit to work come 'Mania.
