The Porsche accident detailed during the intro to this piece cost Magnum his pro wrestling career, but he was very lucky to still be alive. Allen shattered some vertebrae, needed major surgery and had to face the prospect of being paralysed from the neck down for life. Some doctors even thought he might need an iron lung or ventilator to get through day-to-day.

Somehow, despite knowing all of this, the Crockett family figured their top babyface-in-waiting would return to the ring someday. That was either blind faith in his powers of recovery or stupidity, depending on your own point of view on things. There was no way Magnum was taking bumps again.

His body was broken.

Jim Crockett even fancied waiting a little while longer to take the NWA belt off Ric Flair, because he didn't want to waste Magnum's big moment. That's admirable, but business had to march on without Terry Allen. He wasn't coming back, and that was that.
