2. “That Was My Madison Square Garden”
Dylan Summers is no fool. He knew he was never reaching the hallowed turf of Madison Square Garden and WWE as Necro Butcher. Not with that name and not with his in-ring style. So, in a way, he viewed this match vs. Samoa Joe as something to prove indeed. It was his own personal proving ground, and the finish played into that.
Joe didn’t think it’d work if he pinned Butcher or made him submit. Instead, he beat Necro so relentlessly that the man couldn’t even stand and the referee had to stop the match. Then, he kicked Butcher again so the guy could fire back up and end the night standing. It was all calculated and done to put Necro over as the toughest guy in the industry.
Summers understood the assignment and what was going on. It was everything he'd hoped and dreamed when laying out the match in his head beforehand. “I was a made man in that building, and that’s all I ever wanted”. There's something really cool about that, even if the poor chap's body was ravaged by pain and he had more blood on his face than most folks have running through their veins.
Chants of, "Match of the year! Match of the year!" filled the old ECW Arena in Philly as he walked out on his own terms. That seemed to hit Butcher hard when rewatching the match for VICE's doc. It's almost like he didn't remember that or didn't hear those chants way back in 2005.
