10 Things We Learned From Goldberg On Edge & Christian's Podcast

8. A Lack Of "Big Characters" Backstage

Goldberg wasn’t shy on subtly highlighting WWE’s current problems during the interview, and one of his most demoralising points came while talking about the company’s backstage environment. Stating that the locker-room was no longer filled with “big characters,” Goldberg was asked if he felt like this was because wrestlers are being “handcuffed” and held back in what they can do, and his answer confirmed many fans’ fears.

He didn’t state it like a fact, but Goldberg suggested that this is probably a result of management’s lack of faith in the current roster. This goes hand-in-hand with their reliance on part-timers, and explains why guys like Goldberg himself are being trusted with carrying WrestleMania 33 over the likes of Kevin Owens, Dean Ambrose, and AJ Styles.

The restrictions WWE place on their performers are well-documented, and while Goldberg didn’t really elaborate on his point, it sounds like he feels the company would be better off if they put more trust in their full-time employees. It’s hard to argue with him on this point, and perhaps if WWE’s current generation were allowed to be themselves more often, they’d be the megastars WWE want them to be.
