10 Things We Learned From Jerry Lawler On Stone Cold's Broken Skull Sessions Podcast
5. Lawler's Commentary Philosophy
The second half of the interview will be way more appealing to younger fans.
There, Lawler discusses his commentary philosophy and how he approached things when he was working those 'Attitude' era broadcasts with JR. The 'King' says he always tried to look at it like two buddies sitting on a couch together watching the matches. He never really considered himself a great announcer.
It's incredible to hear one of the most defining voices of his generation play down his own work and pin full credit onto the other guys he's worked with. He considered his job the "easy" one compared to play-by-play men like Ross, Vince and Michael Cole. That's humble, to say the least.
There's another interesting part to this segment. Lawler turned his attention to current WWE announcing and said he doesn't think the company want commentators to be big personalities on the off chance they outshine the wrestlers. He's not sure that's the right way of looking at the role.
