10 Things We Learned From John Cena On Stephanie McMahon's WWE Show
3. Steph “Tried To Get [Him] To Go Heel For A Very Long Time”
There's still time for things to properly shake out, but most would agree that WWE's creative team has done a relatively poor job of justifying John Cena's shock heel turn back at Elimination Chamber 2025 in early-March. The actual turn itself was well-handled, but The Rock's immediate (and enduring) absence hasn't done much to push the story along. Instead, John has blasted the audience with several long-winded promos without even mentioning the 'Final Boss' or his part in things.
Stephanie still loves the fact that John finally went rogue at Chamber. She admitted on ESPN that she'd been campaigning for that since Cena was still a full-timer, but he just wouldn't go for it. Many believe that JC was dead set against turning heel because of his dedication to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and kids who looked up to him. Whatever his reasons, McMahon couldn't get him to budge when she was working as part of the writing team.
Apparently, this back and forth had been going on for "a very long time". Who can say for sure how long? Neither Stephanie nor John disclosed that on the show, but it appears McMahon has been nagging at Cena to go heel for close to 20 years now. That's an extraordinary amount of time, and it might make some feel sick that John has been around that long as a top WWE star in the first place.
Regardless of what happened next, Steph was very much on board with Cena hoofing Cody in the stones up in Toronto.
