In July 2018, the then-Dean Ambrose was f*cking miserable.

Benched by a triceps injury and bracing himself for a return, he found his stomach churned with dread when even thinking about WWE life. Eventually, Ambrose did launch a comeback. He reappeared (looking tanned, well-rested, healthy and well-muscled) on the 13 August episode of Raw to help old pal Seth Rollins fend off Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre.

At the time, he looked good, and it seemed like Dean was more motivated than ever to succeed. In reality though, Ambrose was crying out to leave WWE and live on his own terms. He'd have to wait until AEW's Double Or Nothing pay-per-view to bring back the Jon Moxley of old, and he found that liberating.

Last year, this writer believed that Moxley was eager to stamp his mark on WWE when he returned in park physical condition. Behind the scenes, and inside Jon's head, that couldn't have been further from the truth. He wanted out, and he wanted out bad.
