It was at the NXT TakeOver: Toronto event in November, 2016 that Samoa Joe first heard rumblings that he might be moving upwards to the WWE main roster. The Samoan put things out of his head though, largely due to his imminent NXT Title bout opposite Shinsuke Nakamura on the show.

The rumours persisted until Joe was informed just one day shy of the 2017 Royal Rumble that he'd be debuting on Monday Night Raw 48 hours later.

Either WWE had neglected to tell the new Raw recruit about his big moment or television had been re-written to suit his inclusion. Whatever the case, Joe was excited to get started and become involved in the ongoing feud between Triple H and Seth Rollins.

There wasn't much time to prepare. Joe was in attendance for the Rumble and told Y2J of his pleasure upon hearing fans chant his name during the 30-man match; people wanted Joe in the Rumble, but the wait would be worth it when he exploded onto Raw and attacked Rollins the very next night.
