10 Things We Learned From WWE In 2016
5. "Suplex City" Jumped The Shark
Brock Lesnar isn't just a one-of-a-kind athlete - his achievements have also made him a one-of-a-kind character. At SummerSlam 2014, WWE figured out how to use him best - as an overwhelming force of nature that gleefully took opponents to "Suplex City" before handily beating them. Even though he lost the WWE World Championship in 2015, he continued to show exciting dominance against opponents like Roman Reigns and The Undertaker.
This year, though, WWE seemed to be at a loss with what to do with Lesnar. His program with Undertaker was over and they didn't want to put the title on him, so what was left? An underwhelming performance in the Royal Rumble, a forgettable three-way at Fastlane, and a really disappointing match with Dean Ambrose at WrestleMania. According to Ambrose, Lesnar wasn't game to do anything interesting.
"The Beast" made a stunning, victorious return to MMA at UFC 200, but when his victory was overturned following a drug test failure, the bout was written off as a flop. That led to Lesnar's WWE return at SummerSlam, a lame match against Randy Orton with a terrible (and risky) finish. At Survivor Series, a much-hyped dream rematch against Goldberg saw the former WCW Champion quickly squash Brock.
At one point (after he ended Undertaker's streak), a win over Brock was WWE's holy grail. Giving it to a 50-year-old part-timer shows that it doesn't mean as much as it once did, and that Brock simply isn't all that interesting these days.
