10 Things That WWE (Almost) Always Messes Up

9. Anything They Don€™t Create Themselves

WWE seems to have this policy where they take wrestlers who were big in other companies and turn them into something else. Part of this is their trademarking policy, which is an understandable notion in today€™s intellectual property-obsessed world. Vader becoming the Mastodon was one problem. Vince wanted to change Vader€™s name, despite the fact that his reputation was as Vader, not as something else (thankfully, cooler heads prevailed and he kept his name). Another issue was the career of Ultimo Dragon, who was brought in because he was a legendary cruiserweight, yet they barely did anything with him. CM Punk was a prime example of this. As stated in his €˜Best in the World€™ DVD, WWE simply €˜signed someone who had some buzz€™. He was a big name on the independent scene that made his own way, yet early on in his career the WWE didn€™t know what to do with him. WWE tends to screw up frequently in this area. They sign big names from other companies, or people who have experience in other fields, and then make their own versions of those wrestlers. It took Daniel Bryan four years and some very questionable booking decisions for him to be a big star in the WWE, despite the fact that he was quite possible the best wrestler on the planet when he signed with Vince. The good news is that now they have their developmental system, which allows them to create their own superstars. The bad news is that independent stars, like KENTA and Kevin Steen, might be completely changed to fit WWE€™s idea of what a star is. This is a policy that they need to reconsider. If they take a big star from somewhere else and morph them into something else, that star loses their momentum and is left to start from the beginning. It€™s a terrible waste of talent and time. Hopefully, with the newly-signed Kevin Steen (now going under the name Kevin Owens), the WWE won€™t drop the ball with another star that they didn€™t necessarily create themselves.
