10 Things WWE Are Getting Absolutely Right At The Moment
1. The Paul Heyman Custody Battle
This is the best told story on WWE television today.
Even with ‘The Mad Scientist’ Paul Heyman as the centerpiece, this statement would have been unthinkable coming from this writer even three years ago, let alone six when this rivalry was first launched. Thankfully for all parties involved, much has changed since WrestleMania 36.
This isn't the virtuous ‘Big Dog’ versus ‘Unstoppable Beast’ that no one wanted in 2015. This isn’t even ‘Part-Time Brock’ versus ‘Full-Time Roman’ that no one asked for in 2018. Through a few critical character shifts, WWE has flipped the narrative and made it reliably the best angle each week for the last three months.
After his own 16-month hiatus, Brock Lesnar has returned with a renewed vigor. Contrary to his 2014-2019 runs, he doesn’t feel like he’s going through the motions from appearance to appearance. Roman Reigns is doing the best work of his career as the ice cold Tribal Chief, surpassing even The Shield’s stellar first run. And as always, Paul Heyman is playing his part to absolute perfection.
Every piece of the puzzle, the unwanted backstage run-ins with Kayla Braxton, being needled by Lesnar and The Bloodline to determine where his loyalties lie, the brilliant ploy to toss the title between the combatants at Crown Jewel rather than to anyone in particular and the unseen microexpressions behind Reigns’ back have all been so incredibly satisfying. The cherry on top is that no matter where he aligns, Heyman still holds all the cards.
Magnificent.
