10 Things WWE Could Learn From Lucha Underground

2. Write Stories For Everyone

When is the last time that Jack Swagger had an actual story? Not a match, but a story. How about Mark Henry? Sin Cara? Alicia Fox? Paige? Hell, even The Big Show hasn’t had a real feud since a mini one with Brock Lesnar in October.

In WWE, men and women show up, they have matches with the same opponent over and over again, and then they move onto the next person to wrestle over and over again. The main thing lacking from these matches are stories. There’s no journey to follow.

Even after being on the roster for years, I still feel like we don’t know Dolph Ziggler. He likes to “showoff”, whatever that means in the context of a fight, and he sometimes does stand-up comedy in his free time. There’s nothing to get overly excited about. Great talent, but very few things to make you care about him one way or the other.

Over in Lucha, virtually everyone has something going for them. They have feuds, characters, storylines. From Marty “The Moth” Martinez and his creepy obsession with Sexy Star, to Mil Muertes and Fenix battling over life and death. Things happen to everyone, just like every other TV show with recurring characters! Well, every other show besides Raw and SmackDown.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
