10 Things WWE Fans Need To Know About Brock Lesnar & John Cena's History
3. Cena Has Been A Thorn In Heyman's Side For A Long Time
When John Cena became a babyface towards the end of 2003 it was because fans thought he was one of the coolest guys on the roster. A decade later and those same fans probably think he's not cool at all, but if you were watching during those days you can probably remember that he was one of the biggest rising stars in WWE. What's interesting about his rise is that it happened at around the same time as when Paul Heyman was the GM on the Smackdown brand. Of course Heyman was a heel GM, so it was smart of WWE to use his promo ability to help Cena become a bigger star. There was a match on the January 15, 2004 edition of Smackdown with Cena against Rhyno with the stipulation that the loser (Heyman was in support of Rhyno) had to eat soap. Cena won, then with the help of Chris Benoit made Heyman eat soap. It was one of the more entertaining babyface Cena moments in those days. Remember ECW One Night Stand 2006? It was Heyman that counted Cena's shoulders down for the pinfall when Rob Van Dam beat him for the WWE Title. During the Lesnar/Cena feud in 2012 it was just about the wrestlers. This time Heyman is around. It would be nice if WWE mentioned that Heyman never liked Cena when he was the GM of Smackdown as Cena was rising up the charts. I'm not sure if they will mention it, but they should.
