WrestleMania VI may have been Killer Kross' first wrestling memory, but he soon found himself drawn to an altogether more extreme product. As WWF and WCW became embroiled in an increasingly bitter ratings war, ECW was noisily staging a wrestling revolution that soon became the major source of talent and inspiration for the bigger companies. America’s disaffected youth wanted something edgier than face paint and bombast.

Killer Kross was one such youth. Already a pro wrestling fan, the People’s Executioner has spoken of his love of ECW and in particular how ‘real’ it felt. As he grew through his teenage years, Kross found himself struggling with pro wrestling’s legitimacy. He found solace in ECW, describing it as feeling more ‘carnal’, enjoying and embracing the level of sincerity in everything the promotion did.

Taz was a particular favourite. Kross was becoming more and more aware that pro wrestling was a worked form of combat entertainment, but the Human Suplex Machine remained ‘real’, or whatever that meant. The sense of danger and an unwavering addiction to violence is something that Kross has imbued his own character and work with.
