10 Things WWE Fans Need To Know About War Games

3. Other Companies Revived It Before WWE

ROH WarGames
Ring Of Honor

WWE is not the first company to try a WarGames revival out for size. Several others have either directly used the idea or adapted it to their own style, including Ring Of Honor, TNA and Combat Zone Wrestling. Even the old Xtreme Pro Wrestling promotion held a unique 'Genocide' match in 2000.

ROH's 'Steel Cage Warfare' and TNA's 'Lethal Lockdown' versions are by far the most successful to date. ROH have held four thus far, whereas TNA centred the entire LockDown pay-per-view around the gimmick. The only thing they changed was the 2-ring setup, but the rules were very much the same (including 'The Match Beyond' finish).

It'll be interesting to see if WWE continue to evolve WarGames, or go back to basics at NXT TakeOver. The classic feel to Starrcade 2017's card suggests nostalgia is hot for the creative team right now, so there's every chance we'll see the weapons-based brawling of TNA scaled back.
