10 Things WWE Fans Need To Know About War Games
2. Battleground 2013 Almost Brought WarGames Back
During an interview with Ring Rust Radio in August, 2016, Cody Rhodes revealed that WWE almost brought WarGames back for the first ever Battleground pay-per-view in 2013. It's unclear whether or not the match would have simply taken the Battleground branding, but Cody admitted it was doomed to failure from the beginning anyway.
Several backstage at WWE weren't sold on the double-ring look, believing it would diminish lucrative ticket sales by taking away front row seating space in the arena. Thus, Cody teaming alongside his brother Goldust against The Shield was changed to a standard tag team match. What a downer that must have been.
In truth, it's hard to see how a two-on-three WarGames match would work. The gimmick relies on heels having the advantage, yes, but all 3 members of The Shield didn't end up working the tag match anyway. Maybe WWE would have just had all five men in the ring brawling, instead of using the staggered entry system.
