10 Things WWE Could Learn From The Marvel Universe
3. Spending Money To Make Money
Remember McMahon's Million Dollar Mania stunt, where Vince would give away $1m of his own money every week to some lucky fans on Raw? This was all designed to increase ratings but it didn't have the desired effect and was pulled after just a few short weeks, despite all of the hype that went into it. Point is, Vince McMahon has not been afraid to spend money in the past, basically giving out out on television in an attempt to buy ratings. He signed Brock Lesnar to a very lucrative limited appearance contract because he figured it would be best for business in the long run (it hasn't been). No, Vince isn't afraid of splashing out when he thinks it's warranted but, with the state of the WWE Network and falling attendance and ratings, Vince has tightened the purse strings recently. But you gotta spend money to make money sometimes and WWE could use a bit of a cash injection at present. They need to replace the Raw and Smackdown sets for one thing (those have been stale for ages). Marvel are a good example of a company that spends a lot of money but makes considerable more. Marvel Studios have spent over one billion dollars making their films and considerably more than that marketing them, but they have reaped the rewards taking in tens of billions of dollars in box-office receipts and merchandise royalties. With WrestleMania right around the corner and WWE short on headliners, maybe Vince should get out his chequebook and shill out for a big name like Goldberg, The Rock, Steve Austin or Batista to wrestle on the biggest show of the year.
