10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Alberto Del Rio

5. Face Turn In 2013 Was A Failure

It's been referenced a few times throughout this piece already, but it needs to be categorically stated that when Del Rio went babyface in 2013 it was the wrong move. The character was best suited as a heel and, when that changed, he went downhill fast. The face turn was done because WWE felt like they needed to have another babyface Mexican star since, Rey Mysterio was injured and his headline career was pretty much over. Mysterio was more of a midcard act and Sin Cara really didn't work out like WWE had hoped, so they turned Del Rio thinking that he could help fill the void. At first the babyface turn wasn't bad. That's because in January 2013 he was feuding with Big Show and he could work as an underdog babyface against him just because he's the smaller of the two guys. As time went on and he feuded with Jack Swagger, who was never seen as a top heel, the cheers started to fade away. Del Rio faced off with Dolph Ziggler at the June 2013 Payback PPV and won the World Title back from him. Ziggler was doing a concussion story based off his real-life concussion that he had suffered. The match/title change was done as a double turn with Del Rio reverting back to being a heel while Ziggler went face. He spent his last year in WWE as a heel, but he really couldn't get back to the top heel level he was at from 2010-2012. Turning him face was a big mistake. Since WWE isn't going to publicly admit that, consider his face run flop as something that they want you to forget.
