10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Jerry Lawler
5. That Awful Feud With Michael Cole In 2011
Where to begin with this one? For whatever reason, WWE felt like they should have their announcers start a feud. It really didn't make much sense. They turned Michael Cole heel even though he was the play by play that was telling us to spend our money to watch WWE PPVs. If the guy that we don't like is telling us to spend our money why should we listen to him? We don't like him. It makes no sense for the play by play guy to be the heel. Color commentators are the heels. That's the role that Bobby Heenan, Jesse Ventura and Jerry Lawler made famous. Even JBL in today's WWE is the heel announcer. This feud was so bad from the moment it started. The idea behind it was that even though Lawler had been with WWE for nearly 20 years at that point, he didn't wrestle in a WrestleMania. That's pretty dumb in hindsight because they should have involved him in one of the WMs from 1994 to 1996 since he was still active in the ring at that point. Cole talked a lot of trash, so they ended up having a match. They must have known the feud was terrible because they brought Steve Austin in to referee the WrestleMania 27 match to try to save it. He couldn't. The segment lasted about 25 minutes. Cole actually won by DQ even though Lawler really won the match. It's one of the worst WrestleMania matches ever. Lawler may want to forget that the match even took place. I was there and I want to forget that I saw it. You would think that would end the story because it was so awful, but no! They kept it going for two more PPVs with Jim Ross and Jack Swagger also involved. Terrible storyline. They should have just had Lawler wrestle Swagger at WrestleMania with Cole in Swagger's corner if they really wanted to involve Cole. Putting him in a match with Lawler was ridiculous. Lawler versus Cole is one of the worst feuds WWE has done in the history of the company. It's something we all wish we could forget.
