8. The "Macho Man" Name Came From His Baseball Career Not From WWE

The first passion for Randy Poffo growing up was the sport of baseball. He tried really hard to make it in Major League Baseball, but a shoulder injury prevented that from happening. When his pro baseball career ended after a few years, he was trained to be a wrestler by his father Angelo Poffo. A lot of fans have no idea that he made it pretty far as a baseball player. In WWE, they try not to give backstories of a lot of their characters because they want fans to think of these guys as larger than life performers. If they told us that Savage was a failed baseball pro then that makes him look like a loser. Making it to pro ball, even the minor leagues, was a great accomplishment that he should have been praised for. What's interesting about the baseball career is that he got the "Macho Man" name from it. During the DVD, there was a clip of Savage from 1993 where he said he was known for sticking up for his team in baseball as a tough guy. People ended up calling him the "Macho Man" for it. He claimed that they put the name in the papers and fans started bringing "Macho Man" signs to the games. He ended up using it in wrestling because it fit his over the top persona perfectly. On a related point regarding the name, a 2013 article about Savage had a quote from his mom saying she gave him the name. However, that clip by Randy was from 1993 and aired on the documentary that was released recently, so that seems to be the more accurate story. The reason WWE might want you to forget it is because they never really told us that stuff. We found out on his DVD all these years later. If they wanted you to know, we would have known a long time ago.
