10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Bill Demott

2. Defending Chris Benoit

In the wake of the Chris Benoit double-murder and suicide in 2007, WWE were in damage control mode. While retired wrestlers like Marc Mero were coming out of the woodwork and condemning WWE, the company sent some of its more well-spoken performers out to counter them. While the likes of Bret Hart and Chris Jericho handled questions with dignity and, crucially, honesty, people like Ken Kennedy and Chavo Guerrero did more harm than good. A recently-fired DeMott gave his own series of interviews on the news where he defended Benoit. He didn't defend what he did (which is indefensible) but he did say that it was wrong to ignore Benoit because of his contributions to the professional wrestling business. He also attacked people like Steve Austin's ex-wife Debra McMichael for coming out and exposing the business further. DeMott was a friend of Benoit's and was actually called by Benoit before Nancy's murder to see if he wanted to go for a beer (he and Benoit both lived in Atlanta). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DB3q6KxQYvI
