10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Billy Gunn
6. The Fake Gay Wedding
Which leads us to Billy and Chuck. Originally, they were just two big, jacked-up yet nondescript wrestlers that WWE decided to team up because they had nothing better for them and needed some guys to work the second match on house shows. Soon, however, they began to receive a little bit of a push. They got matching ring gear, personalised music and really ramped up certain elements of their gimmick. According to Gunn, at first they were supposed to be like 'self-centred male strippers' who thought that they were hotter than all of the divas but the WWE decided to push things further still. It was insinuated that the characters were involved in a homosexual relationship. After losing a match to Rey Mysterio on a September 2002 edition of Smackdown, Billy was proposed to by Chuck who wanted him to be his 'partner for life'. The wedding ceremony was scheduled for next week. WWE got a lot of mainstream, positive publicity for this angle. Many outlets interpreted this as WWE moving on and a positive step for gay characters on television. How red-faced they were, then, when Billy and Chuck backed out of the wedding, claiming that it was a publicity stunt. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (which had worked with WWE on the angle and secured them a lot of mainstream coverage) condemned the WWE for securing their services under false pretences.
