10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Bray Wyatt
4. Waylon Mercy
Fans of wrestling back in the mid-90s may find the Bray Wyatt character oddly familiar. Back in 1995, Dan Spivey wrestler under the gimmick of 'Waylon Mercy' - itself a character based on Max Cady, the antagonist of Cape Feare. The two gimmicks share many similarities, down to the garish Hawaiian shirts and white pants.
In an interview on Steve Austin's podcast, Wyatt revealed that Spivey actually gave him the idea for the persona during his time in the WWE Performance Centre. Those similarities aren't a coincidence; the veteran actually gave him permission to use the gimmick. Although this story should end any rumours of Rotunda stealing the idea from Spivey, WWE still wouldn't like the idea of such a recycled gimmick becoming common knowledge.
