Once his contract with AOL/Time Warner elapsed, Goldberg was looking for a fresh gig to keep the pennies rolling in. WWE provided that opportunity, putting a one-year deal on the table for the former WCW World Heavyweight Champion. Signing on the dotted line, goldberg was now a WWE Superstar, and his debut was a promising start to proceedings. Attacking The Rock, Goldberg then defeated the man at Backlash 2003.

It seemed only a matter of time before he clashed with Triple H over the World Heavyweight Championship, and that seemed to be the direction WWE were moving. Goldberg ran over everybody on his way to the top, as WWE used many of the same tricks WCW had successfully employed years earlier. Then, at SummerSlam, Goldberg was pinned by Triple H inside the Elimination Chamber. This was a setback.

When he eventually did win the World Title at Unforgiven, WWE officials reasoned that Goldberg wasn't cutting it on top. Thus, he dropped the belt at Armageddon. At no point was it was acknowledged that Goldberg's momentum was halted by Triple H at SummerSlam, when he really should have been allowed to look dominant.
