10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Hell In A Cell

9. Early Overkill

The modern-day Hell in a Cell PPV has certainly diluted the appeal of its titular stipulation. Fans like to remember the Cell concept as a far less predictable concept, cropping up only when a storyline needed a particularly explosive exclamation point. Nowadays, with Hell in a Cell matches rigidly guaranteed at the same time every year, their spectacular aura has been somewhat lost. However, if we take the rose-tinted spectacles off for a second, things weren't always so perfect. The first Cell match came at Badd Blood 1997, and saw the iconic debut of Kane - so far, so good. However, just one year later, fans were subjected to three such matches in around two months. One was the now-legendary clash between Undertaker and Mankind, but the other two occurred on Raw, clocking it at just over 10 and 7 minutes respectively. Less than a year into its lifespan, and the Cell match was in serious danger of over-saturation. Luckily, WWE got their heads straight and began limiting such matches - but, had they continued in the same vein, the stipulation might now be a barely-remembered relic of the past.
