10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Melina

1. Batista And Backstage Notoriety

Melina's first run with WWE was wrought with controversy. The backstage rumour mill seemed to have a special section dedicated solely to her, and claims of major heat followed her like the proverbial moth to a flame, albeit a moth that had grown numb to the charring inevitability of that fire. Admittedly, the secret world of WWE was far leakier and far cattier back in the first decade of this century, but Melina's name was never far away from a story.

Backstage romances are inevitable in the hyper-intense world of WWE, but the short-lived fling between Melina and Batista seems to irk more than most. Melina was just out of a long-term relationship with John Morrison, while Batista was a top of the card superstar just getting out of a divorce. Batista and Melina were together for a short while, a blink and you'll miss it fling that was nobody's business except their own.

Except such mentalities are difficult to stick to in pro wrestling. The dalliance came complete with a mountain of baggage, everything from the insulting (whispers of Morrison 'loaning' Melina to Batista) to the gossip of total conjecture (Morrison's career being derailed by the romantic liasons of his ex). All of it vaguely made its way onscreen when Melina seemingly seduced The Animal in an attempt to remove him from a match against MNM, only for Batista to thank her for the 'warm up'.

It was all very insulting really, a derisory attempt by WWE creative to scratch its strange obsession with blurring the lines between fiction and reality. Either way, don't expect Melina's history with Batista to feature in her return to the product.

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
